animales dom?sticos, aves y reptiles.
humano.
Palabras clave: Salmonella spp, Caiman cocodrilus, Babilla, Serotipificaci?n.Salmonella is considered a normal inhabitant of the gastrointestinal tract of domestic
animals, birds and reptiles. The bacteria may take advantage of environmental factors
such as stress and captivity to proliferate and invade animal tissues and to cause disease
and thus human beings in permanent contact with these animal species become at risk
of the infection. In order to begin to understand the health status of the Caiman crocodilus,
this preliminary study was designed to isolate and characterize the serotypes of
Salmonella spp., present in the gastrointestinal tract of C. fuscus in their natural habitat
(Hydroprado Dam). Cloacal swabs samples were collected for microbiological isolation,
serotyping and molecular confirmation through conventional PCR. A total of 15
Salmonella isolates were obtained from 80 samples. Serotyping identified Salmonella
Paratyphi B (n = 2), S. Saintpaul (n = 2), S. Javiana (n = 4), S. Braenderup (n = 3), S.
Soerenga (n = 1), S. Infantis (n = 1), and two Salmonella isolates could not be serotyped.
The InvA gene was successfully amplified in all Salmonella isolates. These results
indicate that Salmonella spp., is present in the gastrointestinal tract of clinically healthy
Caiman Crocodylus fuscus in its natural habitat. The identified serotypes suggest a
potential risk of transmission of Salmonella to the people in close contact with these
animals. Additional studies with large coverage are required to understand the dynamics
of the microorganism, its possible association with disease in crocodiles and as a
potential source of human salmonellosis.
